National denim day is observed due to the following court case.

In 1992, an 18 year old in Italy was picked up by her driving instructor to begin a driving lesson. Soon after, the driving instructor raped her on the side of the road. She pressed charges and won her case. The instructor appealed, and the case went to the Italian High Court. In 1999, the court overturned the conviction with the member of the High Court declaring that since the victim wore tight jeans, the instructor could not have removed them himself, therefore the victim must have willingly participated.

Women of the Italian legislature protested the decision by wearing jeans. As the news spread, so did the protest. In 1999, the state of California established the first Denim Day in the United States. Please join us in support of Denim Day by wearing your denim and together we can take a stand against all sexual violence.

Please call PAVE at 920-887-3810 for more details about how to bring denim day to your workplace. Currently, Summit Credit Union in Beaver Dam is planning to participate with us.

Summit Joins Denim Day Efforts

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. To help increase awareness in Dodge County, PAVE is promoting participation in Denim Day. Demin Day began in Italy. In 1992, a young woman was sexually assaulted by her driver's education instructor. He was initially convicted, but the case was overturned on appeal in 1999, with the High Court in Italy declaring that the victim wore such tight jeans that the perpetrator could not have removed them himself, therefore she willingly participated. Women of the Italian Legislature all wore jean in protest of the decision. As the news spread, so did “Denim Day”. California was the first state in the United States to hold a Demin Day and this year, Wisconsin is joining the awareness efforts. On Wednesday, April 27th, Denim Day will be celebrated across the globe. PAVE is asking that anyone interested in participating to please contact them for details at 887-3810 or pave@peopleagainstaviolentenvironment.com. PAVE is especially hoping that businesses will participate so the visibility of Denim Day is seen across the county.
Summit Credit Union in Beaver Dam is the first business to agree to participate in Denim Day. They will be hanging posters with Denim Day information and collecting donations from staff to wear jeans that day. Lynnette Hoch, Branch Manager at Summit Credit Union in Beaver Dam says, “It is important to be involved with programs that connects consumers, community causes, and cooperative organizations to improve people’s lives. Demin Day is a wonderful way to do just that.”

PAVE appreciates Summit's commitment to our community and hopes other businesses will join us in brining awareness about victimization in Dodge County.
The staff raised seven boxes of shelter supplies for us! Shown with me are Marica Fritz and Julie Steil, who each sponsored a shelter night as well. My family has had the privilege of knowing Marcia as my daughter's second grade teacher and Julie as facilitating student council. Through Marica and Julie and all the wonderful staff at Washington I get to see firsthand how Washington supports service learning and teaches students with activities and by example that caring for our community matters. Thank you all for your kind support!~

Our Wonderful Schools

The children in our community are so generous.

Just this week I received a donation of over 180 nonperishable food items from Washington Elementary School in Beaver Dam and food items along with a $119 from Lincoln Elementary School in Beaver Dam. Impressive!

Thanks everyone!

PAVE visits Horicon Phoenix

Thank you to the Horicon Phoenix group for inviting PAVE out to their Farmer's Market last night. We gave away some PAVE water bottles, brochures and painted some faces. We also enjoyed the FFA's corn boil and the music of Steve Cohen. The Don Peachy Polka Band plays, the Asbury Clowns performed and I spoke about the services we provide to victims of violence in Dodge County. The collection raised over $500 for PAVE. She asked all the typical questions - what do you do, what's easy, what's hard, what services to you offer to victims, etc, etc. And then she asked: Why did you get into this field? I explained my history, my a-ha moment and why this work is a calling for me. I'd like to thank her for helping me stop in the middle of a Friday afternoon and remember why I do what I do. One was to raise funds to support the work we do with victims of violence. The other was to thank those in our community that go above and beyond to further our mission. While we had many excellent candidates this year, as it was our first opportunity to give awards, we finally decided on these wonderful recipients.

Representing Rechek's Food Pride in Beaver Dam is Brett Rechek as our business/group recipient. Rechek's puts together bags of househould items and groceries based on what our shelter needs are and sells them in the store. Last year, they did this twice, as our food and shelter item donations were low. Their bags got our pantry and supply shelves stocked through this winter with items that we truly needed.

Elaine Mullin is our individual recipient of the 2010 Sweet Thanks award. Elaine was intregal in getting our shelter meditation room set up by assisting curtains, helping to secure a flooring donation and delivering books on domestic violence and sexual assault. Elaine also put us in touch with Knight of Columbus who donated money to address some electrical repairs.

On the far right is Jason Fenske, our volunteer recipient. Jason came to us as a Criminal Justice intern and helped with everything from initial victim meetings to answering the crisis line to yard clean up. He was always willing to do whatever needed to be done and we appreciate his efforts.

Beaver Dam Jazz Ensemble Plays at Sweet Thanks

Led by Rich Zeman, the Beaver Dam High School Jazz Ensemble provided an hour of entertainment to our Sweet Thanks guests. Considering the question: If I needed services, what would help make that a better experience? We've made lots of positive changes – adding a monthly family night for our support group participants where non-offending parents and their children engage in activities together to strengthen their bonds (funded in 2010 by the Beaver Dam noon Kiwanis), creating advocaty evaluations so our clients can provide anonymous feedback regarding the services they received, starting a clinic right at the courthouse so victims across the county do not have to travel to our offices to receive assistance with restraining orders.
My favorite project – the one that has been my baby all year – is our Meditation Room. I knew with the numbers at PAVE as they stood in 2009 (shelter nights quadrupled since 2007), anyone staying with us could use some space and time of their own. Our shelter has mostly communal spaces – the kitchen, living room, playroom and bathrooms are all shared. Last year, due to the great need, even the bedrooms were holding multiple families, giving residents no space to be alone, reflect, meditate, pray, read, journal, whatever they choose to obtain peace of mind during their tumultuous experience.

So began my quest to find donors to turn a tiny room we were using for office supplies into a useful space in our shelter. Local Beaver Dam resident Elaine Mullin was integral in making this a reality. Her and a group of friends made new window coverings for the entire shelter, including the meditation room. She also ordered a core list of books related to domestic violence and sexual assault to fill the bookshelves. Then she approached Joe at Integrity Flooring. Joe dedicated new carpeting not only to the meditation room, but our playroom and two bathrooms – going above and beyond what we ever expected. Elaine also contacted Lori Liddicoat, who donated a couch and chair in honor of her mom. Inspired by Elaine's success and momentum, I emailed Animart to see if we could get a little fish tank for the room. Within a few weeks, they delivered a 55 gallon tank and stand to match. I purchased new paint and a volunteer from Kraft, Rita Shears, spent an entire day re-painting the room. To top everything off, our Board and staff made donations in honor of Donna L. Griep – Board member Rich Griep's mother – who had recently passed. With those donations we purchased a filter, fish and food, truly giving life to the room. It opened Christmas Eve – a gift from the community to make residency in shelter a bit more peaceful.

You have all heard me say it a million times before, but it is worth repeating. This community is amazing. I have been Executive Director at PAVE for just under two years and in that time there hasn't been a goal, a project, a need for victims that I have expressed that has gone unfulfilled. Our staff, our Board of Directors, our community make it a joy and an honor to fulfill my calling of assisting those affected by violence. Thank you.

Thank you Quad Graphics - Windhover Foundation

In 2009, PAVE sent a request to the Quad Graphics Windhover Foundation asking that they assist us in updating our fire alarm system. With the help of our community and some very generous donors we helped bring our budget back on track. PAVE provided twice as many nights of shelter in 2008 as we did in 2007 and we are looking at high numbers already in the first month of 2009. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that when there is high economic strain, the rate of intimate partner violence more than triples. We think this may have something to do with the numbers we are seeing in shelter.

Thank you to everyone that helped make our fundraising a success!

Wisconsin Domestic Homicide Report

The Wisconsin Domestic Homicide Report (WDHC) became public on October 1, 2008. Domestic Violence claimed 67 lives in Wisconsin during 2006 and 2007. This figure includes 14 victims that were children. Fortunately for Dodge County, there were no domestic homicides in 2006. However, 2007 brought Dodge County the Sherry Asbury tragedy. According to the WDHC, Sherry was strangled and beaten by her estranged husband, Jeff, in the village municipal building. Jeff was found guilty of first degree reckless homicide after a no-contest plea. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 15 years extended supervision. This unfortunate situation reminds us all how important it is to support victims and to diligently work to make sure domestic violence is not our culture in Dodge County.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is here!

We are now a week into our county-wide efforts to increase awareness about Domestic Violence this October. At the beginning of the month, we distributed purple ribbons, posters, table tents and event calendars all across Dodge County - you should be able to find them at many locations. If you cannot, contact PAVE and we can mail materials to you. We hope you will join us in wearing a purple ribbon this month to signify that you believe Domestic Violence is not our culture. We also had a good deal of fun recording our public service announcements at WXRO/WBEV - thanks to them for putting the word out and thanks to our volunteers that assisted in the taping.

Last week we had our Elder Abuse event in Juneau and showed a powerful video that displayed five case studies of individuals that were victims of abuse at the hands of their lifetime spouses, children and co-parents. It was very sad to watch, but also motivated our staff to push forward with outreach to this particularly isolated group.

Next week is our new support group for family and friends effected by domestic abuse and sexual assault at Beaver Dam Community Library. The group meets Monday night...contact our Case Manager for the time.

Check our calendar of events on the website for more information about upcoming events or call PAVE to learn how we can bring awareness to your group.

Karaoke Event Thank Yous!

PAVE would like to extend a big THANKS to Supercharged Karaoke, Johnny's Lounge and The Cellar for participating in our Karaoke Fundraising event - we hope to make it even bigger and better next year!

Thanks to the Vineyard and inmate artists!

A big THANKS to the Vineyard Coffee Shop and inmate artists that made our art sale fundraiser possible.
